Heat Exchanger CFD Model in ANSYS

Thermofluids B · University coursework
01 What

Modelled a double-pipe heat exchanger in ANSYS to see how far a hot stream cools and a cold stream warms as they pass each other through the pipe wall. I took ownership of the whole model, from the zones and mesh to the solution and the checks that proved it had settled.

02 How
  1. 01Built the four zones of the model: the hot fluid, the cold fluid, and the inner and outer pipe walls.
  2. 02Meshed with hex and mixed cells, then checked orthogonal quality and aspect ratio zone by zone before solving.
  3. 03Solved flow and energy together with a turbulence model, tracking every residual as the solution developed.
  4. 04Monitored the hot and cold outlet temperatures until both settled, rather than trusting the residuals alone.
03 Result
  • -Successfully measured the outlet temperature of both streams and showed each settling to a steady value.
  • -From those outlet temperatures, derived how far the hot stream cooled and the cold stream warmed.
  • -Reached convergence with every residual meeting its criterion, on a mesh that passed the quality checks.
